Texas Educational Opportunity Grant (TEOG) Program

These grants are provided by the Texas Legislature to provide grant aid to financially needy students.

Initial Award Eligibility Requirements

  • Be registered with the Selective Service or be exempt;
  • Have a nine-month SAI of no more than $6,514;
  • Be classified by the institution as a Texas resident;
  • Have not been convicted of a felony or crime involving a controlled substance;
  • Not be more than 30 days delinquent in making child support payments;
  • Not concurrently receiving a renewal Texas Grant; and
  • Be enrolled at least half-time and in the first 45 hours (or its equivalent) of an associate degree or certificate program (excluding credits for dual enrollment or by examination).

Renewal Award Eligibility Requirements

  • Meet the initial award criteria (above); 
  • Not have attempted more than 75 hours
  • Have maintained satisfactory progress for this program, defined as:
    • 2.5 cumulative GPA and
    • 75 percent successful completion of attempted hours

Satisfactory Progress for the TEOG program is calculated differently than satisfactory progress for the other financial aid programs and is calculated only once per year after the Spring semester.

The maximum award varies each year, and the award is adjusted based on enrollment status.

Hardship Provision

A student who is ineligible for a TEOG may be eligible under a hardship provision based on one of the following provisions:
  • The student's GPA falls below SAP requirements
  • The student's completion rate falls below SAP requirements
  • The student is enrolled for fewer than 6 SCHs or the equivalent
  • The student requires an extension of the year limits
  • The student receives a grant after attempting more than 75 hours:
    • However, the total number of hours paid for, at least in part, with TEOG funds may not exceed 75 semester credit hours or the equivalent
